Pat Williams - Cyber Cletch

In 1999, after studying behavioural science, and moving to Columbus, Ohio, Pat worked for a time at writing and photography for a small town newspaper. Loving and learning (technology in particular), led a real estate agent to Pat, and that afforded Pat the chance to build a website for the agent. It was well received, and more agents were lining up to get websites built. Pat, for her part, put serious effort into more learning (things like graphic design, photography, and even print advertising), and simultaneously focused much time on the Internet. In 2002 she created CyberCletch LLC, began to build the team she has today—it includes writers, virtual assistants, expert marketers, campaign managers, and others. Fast forward to 2012 when this interview took place, and you’ll find that Pat knows a lot about a lot, but in particular has positioned herself as an expert in Search Engine Optimization (SEO). And that fact alone is worth the time you should take to listen to the interview between Pat Williams and Rob Neilly.

So how about we get you set up for that, and tell you a little more about what you’ll find when you listen to the interview, and about the ways in which Pat and her team can help you as a small business owner.

One of the many reasons Pat is so successful at what she does—and her business is expanding again in 2012—is due to her interest in behavioural sciences. People everywhere, in every walk of life want feel valued. In the interview, Pat will tell you that it’s not hard to find the value in other people. It’s an interesting segment, and one that lies at the foundation of many other things Pat talks about.

As we’ve said, much of Pat’s personal expertise lies in the realms of social media. After she’d moved from Ohio, she undertook a several year ‘experiment’, if you will, that allowed her first hand to see the value of social media. Working in the real estate field (another area Pat knows a lot about), she soon discovered that social media was more than just a way of meeting new people or business associates. This fired her interest up, and led her to understanding much more about how the intricacies of SEO really work. Listening to her talk about these things is not simply a pleasurable experience—though it is that and more—it’s an educational experience. But then, that’s why we ask people like Pat to guest on this network. If you listen to the interview, and you don’t know much about SEO, you’ll learn:

·         To look carefully at the words you see on a company’s website, as well as figuring out the ones you don’t

·         To find out what it is that might get you more highly placed when someone searches for you or your business in Google or another search engine

·         To begin with SEO strategy, and not to try to retrofit your website after it’s built

·         To more closely examine the goals—the purpose—of your site

·         To differentiate between a keyword and a Long Tail Keyword Phrase

Pat’s not only very observant, she’s a true networker, and that includes networking in person as well as on the Net. The interviewer (Rob Neilly) first really met Pat at a networking event for virtual assistants, remembered the impact, had infrequent contact with her, and then decided he needed to line up an interview with her for … just for you!

There are efficiencies you can gain in launching your company and that includes the ones that have to do with your Internet presence. Pat will say that “time is not free”, and this is important to know as you move forward.

Everyone knows what we mean by ‘Googling it’; are we right? Well, there’s some serious history behind why and how Google works, and what it pays attention to. Due to “keyword stuffing”, done by ‘Black Hat’ SEO firms (people hired to promote websites in any way possible, including unethical ways), the world of SEO has become more complicated. So sites like Google began to ignore some of the ‘tags’ that SEO experts used. Today, keywords cannot help your search engine ranking, but there are things that can. Listen in on that part of the interview—oh, say, about halfway through the interview—and we think it will be of immediate help. If nothing else, it might help point you to Pat’s firm, CyberCletch, to get in on some of its expertise.

Here at the Small Business Success Network we love guests who are ‘naturals’. You know the kind, easy going, knowledgeable, and able to speak intelligently about what they know. Pat is exactly one of those guests. An hour seems never enough time for an interview, and if you listen in closely, you’ll hear the interviewer acknowledge he has to skip a question, and later announce the halfway point of the interview, which to Pat felt like “five minutes”. In Pat, we have a great guest we want to have back. We think you’ll feel the same when you hear her speak.

As a small business owner, entrepreneur, or solopreneur, the advice from our guests—like Pat Williams—is invaluable. After all, you have many irons in the fire as you start and then begin to sustain your small business, you may need legal advice, you may want to know a heck of a lot more about marketing, or in Pat’s case, you may need to understand the ways in which you can help your presence on the Internet, and avoid being seen as a spammer. You know, there are numerous little tricks, workarounds, and just plain solid facts that can help you distinguish yourself and your business from your competitors. In this interview, Pat will help you ‘coordinate’ your messages, especially as they relate to search engine optimization. Before the interview is done, Pat will comment about updating or adding fresh content, to keep yourself and your business in clear sight of search engines and others.
